Hi everyone
In Christchurch at the Secondary Support Staff Seminar - we discussed the issues of National Standards. Although not apparently impacting on us in our roles - it did raise discussions around how NCEA first impacted and continues to impact on Support Staff.... lessons for Primary??
From an Admin point of view - significant increased data entry, specialised skill, letters to parents when children not available for testing/assessment. reporting is driven by standards and teaching is driven by standards and reporting! vicious cycle
Library - suitable resources required for teaching, more of a teaching role by Library Staff to assist the teachers, students etc + the ongoing increases to desk activity
Setting up children to fail - so focus on academic outcomes and league tables - students who dont learn in that way are severely disadvantaged. Programmes developed but students cant attend all these programmes because they need to be in class to take exams.
Not holistic approach to learning, they come out not achieving the school model, self esteem issues, problems with fitting in society etc
Students outcomes are important but shouldnt just focus on academic - it is about being successful within society. Positive outcome is needed
More students identified as under achieving, more management time needed, more pressure of teacher aides and teachers to address issue, more resources needed, more pressure on finances. Teaching to the test,
Pressure on school counselors, pastoral care etc
