Supporting Success in Education
Thats if I have got my sums right and I think I have. I keep checking and get the same answers.
Can you believe it - I am seriously thinking of withdrawing from the union and going it alone.
Support staff have ratified the agreement - most thinking that what was offered was better than nothing - I don't think that they realise that entry level support staff will not get to what entry level cleaners get now ($15.03) until March 2013 and by then the cleaners will have had two more pay rises in January and July 2012.
And NZEI go and vote in an increase of 9.65% for subs at the annual conference so there goes a big part of our 1.5% payrise.
The only way that support staff will be paid what they are worth is to be centrally funded like the teaching staff and this is what should be concentrated on and talked about and pushed for.

Comment by Diann Rassell on November 10, 2011 at 1:02pm There have been 5 members at my worksite leave the union since the fee increases were announced and as some of them (but not all) have had hours cut as well, I can't blame them (and I am the worksite rep). My husband is in the PSA and on a far larger salary than I am and he pays less in union fees ! I think it was a disgrace to negotiate a paltry increase and then raise the fees. I will have to think long and hard myself as to whether I continue in the Union as I am in a College that treats it's non-members exactly the same as NZEI members.
Comment by John Ferguson on October 17, 2011 at 12:21pm Linda how many people do you think will be leaving the union? I think you will be surprised I for one will be leaving the union, why would I even think of staying, all they do do is take more money off me than they manage to negotiate in a pay rise. Cash strapped and they take more money off us, how does that make sense. I think a complete overhaul of the system would make sense. Saying that something has been to the forefront of the union for as long as you can remember does not make it better.
Comment by Linda Jordan on October 2, 2011 at 7:19pm Yes Margaret, you are correct in your post, although there is some info being missed. Although cleaners may get a better starting rate, this is their only rate. I believe there is a larger percentage of cleaners who are union members as well. It is all about numbers to give us more power!
I was at Annual Meeting when the subs increase was discussed at length. I had to think long and hard about this increase, as I too am hard strapped for extra cash these days. I also know what work NZEI is doing to promote SS and to cut costs within the union so it goes where needed, to promote the members.
You have also mentioned the idea of centralised funding, this has been the stance of NZEI for as long as I can remember and as was mentioned in the settlement under the heading Industrial Forum, this is one of the issues they will be discussing.
Please remember that our power is in the NUMBERS and as Support Staff we need to be involved in the campaigns as they evolve and have OUR SAY! Support Staff Rock.
