Following recent announcements from the Government around proposed changes to ACC, NZEI Te Riu Roa have prepared a Submission to the Transport and Industrial Relations Select Committee on the proposed changes. There are significant implications for Support Staff members if the proposed changes come into effect. An additional increase to ACC levys will certainly prove difficult let alone a proposed change to how compensation would be calculated. Previously compensation has been based on earnings in the previous 12 months. The proposal suggests that this should be changed to be calculated on the the previous 4 weeks earnings, causing problems for a support staff worker who for example has an accident requiring time off work in the first week back after term break and have been unpaid during the holidays. In effect, they may not be entitled to full compensation under the proposed model. As the majority of School support staff are unpaid during term break, this could have serious repercussions for a group of workers who are already seriously underpaid. The Council of Trade Unions (CTU) will also be submitting a more comprehensive submission on behalf of all affiliated unions.
